Presentation Examines Apple Orchard Management with PGRs

Duane W. Greene, University of Massachusetts, has released a presentation entitled, “Apple Growth Management with Plant Growth Regulators.” The presentation provides insights concerning his review of use prohexadione-calcium (Pro-Ca) as a vegetative inhibitor, including application best practices and fruit set results. He also addresses chemical thinning, which he notes is “probably the most important management activity a grower is required to do, but it is also the least understood and most intimidating activity.” The presentation also addresses thinning without carbaryl due to changes in the marketplace that favor carbaryl-free fruit. Other thinners examined include Amid-Thin, NAA, MaxCel and Brevis. Finally, the presentation provides data concerning the use of ReTain on apple trees.
